OUR NEXT DAY TRIP IS OF A SLIGHTLY different variety: first the Museo Ferrari then the Museo Lamborghini, in Modena and Bologna respectively. Roland is so excited to bring his boy to these museums heâs practically vibrating in his seat.
To the credit of both museums, they do an excellent job of portraying the cars in interesting ways, providing historical context and the stories behind their making. I especially appreciate Lamborghiniâs creative displays of the cars that have featured in movies. For Roland, these cars are like masterful works of art. I can appreciate where heâs coming from and so I work extra hard on being patient. I give him all the time he needs to wander through the galleries and take a ride in the simulator.
Once we leave the Lamborghini museum, we search for a local Italian restaurant to eat at before we drive back to Florence. We come across Pizzeria Maggi, which has decent reviews online and a high convenience factor, being right around the corner.
I have been on the hunt for the best tiramisu in Italy, a fun and exciting mission, since we arrived. I rarely have sweet cravings and most desserts donât appeal to me. However, tiramisu is one of my favorites and since Iâm in the motherland I will not waste the opportunity. When the waitress brings it I can tell this particular homemade batch has potential by the color of the whipped mascarpone, which has a brighter yellow to it than most.
I dip my fork into the soft, spongy dessert and take my first bite. In an instinctual reaction, my eyes close, and I inhale softly, then exhale with a long mmm. The sponge is so thoroughly soaked in the espresso that it dissolves in my mouth, and the whipped mascarpone spun with egg and sugar is smooth and full-bodied.
âOh my, that good is it?â Roland asks. I open my eyes to find him staring at me yearninglyâwell, at the dessert actually.
âYou have to try this.â
âDo you want to try mine?â
âNo thank you. I donât want to disturb whatâs happening in my mouth right now.â
âOh my word . . .â he murmurs at the first mouthful. âThis is incredible. I love all tiramisu, but this is next level.â
Just then, the waitress comes by to check on us. The short, sturdy woman smiles with pride as we gush about how this is the best tiramisu weâve had in all of Italy.
âCan we please order two servings to go?â I request. âIs it possible to pack it up? We need to drive back to Florence today, but this cannot be the last time I taste this.â
âSi, si, of course.â She smiles, her apple cheeks flush with joy.
With miraculous self-control, we savor our to-go desserts over the next three days, wanting to indulge in it but also trying desperately to save some, wishing the dish would never empty.
ON OUR LAST DAY IN FLORENCE, we walk into the Galleria dellâAccademia di Firenze, excited to visit one of the most famous statues in the world.
